Experience
Hello! My name is Claire, and I have 20 years of experience as a math & science instructor and private tutor, both in-person and online. For my day job, I am an algebra and calculus instructor at a large university, and I've worked as a private tutor on the side for many years. Over the years, I have helped HUNDREDS of students overcome their math anxiety so they can do better in their classes and make progress towards their academic goals. This is my passion, and I would be thrilled to help you in your math class. Read on for some details: IN-PERSON: I live in Macon County, NC and can easily make the trip to WCU and surrounding area. ONLINE: I have a great setup to teach remotely, just as if we were sitting across the kitchen table from each other. I can work with you to make sure the session will go smoothly, and there are multiple options for online platforms (Zoom, Google Meet, etc.). Even if you have not used these platforms for synchronous education, I can help you figure it out and my priority is to find a method that will work for you! MY TEACHING STYLE: I value helping the student feel like they are an active participant in their own learning process: rather than just telling the student the right answer, I help illuminate the path forward. This helps the student become a more resilient, independent learner. My students consistently report doing better in their classes and feeling more confident in themselves. I love seeing the "light bulb moment" when working with a student! Additionally, I have tons of experience with neurodivergent learners. Please get in touch with me to see if we'd be a good fit for each other. EXPERIENCE: (I'm happy to provide details if you send me a message!) 2019 to present: College Algebra & Calculus Instructor (college level) 2017-2019: Instructional Assistant (college level) 2016-2017: SAT and ACT tutor (high school level) 2010-2016: Geology Instructor (college level) 2006-present: math and science tutor (K-12 and college level)
